The Oroville Dam Flood Plain Evacuation: Resources

I have many things to say to California State government officials about the current crisis with the Oroville Dam spillways. Because many of you failed to heed explicit warnings twelve years ago, 200,000 people were forced out of their homes with less than one hour’s notice. Many of these people are also temporarily or permanently out of work. Farmers are away from their farms, unable to plant and unsure whether they will make a crop this year. None of them knows whether they’ll get to go back in a few days, a few weeks, a few months, or not at all.

So (deep breath) their needs come first. I’ll rant later if I have energy left. Below are the most useful web resources I have found for evacuees. The organizations listed here also need donations, for those who want to help.

  • Butte County: Oroville Evacuation Information. Official Butte County website. Contains evacuation order specifying which areas are covered, phone numbers for various emergency services including ambulance, fire and rescue. Also contains up-to-date information about places evacuees can go.
  • Map: Locations of Resources for Evacuees. Google map with shelter locations and other resources for evacuees.
  • Shelters and Needs List. Google docs spreadsheet listing shelters that are accepting evacuees with locations. Specifies whether pets and/or large animals are welcome, what kinds of donations the shlter needs, and whether volunteers are needed.
  • OROVILLE DAM EVACUATION INFO FOR SHELTER, PETS & LIVESTOCK (Interactive. Google docs document file with up-to-date shelter information, including more details for those who have pets or livestock.
  • Northern California Sikh Temples. Sikh temples( Called “gurudwaras”) in the Sacramento area and throughout the Sacramento and northern San Joaquin valleys have opened their doors to evacuees. Here is a list of addresses and phone numbers/contact info:
